Women Deliver conference is drawing attention from numerous women, particularly those working in the health sector. They are seizing this opportunity to share their remarkable stories of overcoming challenges specific to women, such as those related to health technology and reproductive health, among others. It is worth noting that this conference is taking place in Rwanda, attracting a staggering attendance of over 6,000 participants.
Andrea Novella is Global Digital Health advisor, Viya said that”When discussing the latest innovations and technological solutions, our approach involves building a comprehensive ecosystem that encompasses both online and offline elements. This ecosystem leverages online channels such as social media, collaborations with content creators, a 24/7 chatbot for information dissemination, and a dedicated website.
Additionally, we offer telemedicine services for convenient online access. However, we also recognize the importance of the offline aspect of our solution, which involves collaborating with healthcare providers to deliver products and services.
Our collaboration with healthcare providers ensures that we have a network of trusted providers who can cater to the specific needs of women, offering a safe and supportive environment.
In terms of innovation, it is crucial to understand that it extends beyond technology. During the panel discussion, I touched upon the concept of innovation and metrics, emphasizing that health should not solely be defined in terms of disease prevention but also encompass overall wellness. As part of our FP2030 commitments, we aim to innovate in the area of metrics, redefining how we measure health to include wellness. The format of innovation extends beyond financial considerations and also encompasses educational institutions.
I highlighted the significant role that women play in our focus on sexual and reproductive health. Our goal is to empower women to reclaim their spaces, make informed health choices, and shape their own futures. Central to our mission is the emphasis on bodies, sexual and reproductive health. However, we also acknowledge that there are challenges to achieving this empowerment.
There are numerous challenges that need to be addressed. One major challenge is the systemic difficulty in accessing information and care. Additionally, there is still a gender gap in digital connectivity, with many women lacking access to the internet or smartphones, thereby limiting their ability to access available information.
Even if access is available, societal norms and influences can hinder women from feeling empowered to make their own decisions. An example from my personal experience that I shared during the panel discussion was the shame I felt regarding menstruation. Shame and stigma form significant barriers that women and girls encounter when it comes to asserting their health choices.
In addressing these challenges, we must work towards overcoming systemic barriers to information and care access. Efforts should be made to bridge the gender gap in digital connectivity, ensuring that all women have equal opportunities to access information.
Additionally, it is crucial to challenge and change societal norms that contribute to shame and stigma surrounding women’s health. By doing so, we can create an environment that empowers women to take ownership of their health choices.
Andrea Novella also discussed the importance of spaces, solidarity, and solutions in creating a safe and inclusive environment for women and girls. Novella emphasized the significance of establishing a space where women and girls can conveniently access all their essential needs, including information, products, and services in a centralized location.
